Here’s a quick refresher on federal tape regulations:
USDOT Reflective Tape Guidelines for Trucks & Trailers
For trucks over 10,000 lbs and 80″ wide, use 2″ wide DOT C2 tape in red/white alternating pattern. Tape must cover 50% of each side in either a 6/6 or 7/11 pattern. The lower rear needs two strips and an inverted “L” of white at top corners.
USDOT Conspicuity Tape (Reflective Tape) for Trailers
Since 1992, trailers 80″ wide or more and 10,000 lbs+ must have 2″ DOT-C2 tape covering 50% of each side, with a solid red/white line on the rear and “L” shaped white corners on top rear.
FRA Railroad Reflective Tape Requirements
Since 2005, FRA mandates 4″ wide yellow or white retro-reflective tape along railcar sides, placed to maximize visibility—especially at unmarked crossings.
